While Sony and Microsoft remain tight-lipped about their upcoming consoles, game developers aren’t wasting any time. A revealing job offer
Cloud Imperium Games, best known for the ambitious Star Citizen, recently posted several job openings at its offices in Manchester and Frankfurt. Among them, a Cinematic Animator position stands out: the studio is looking for talent with strong experience on both current and next-gen gaming systems.
Squadron 42: a prestigious solo campaign
The project in question is none other than Squadron 42, a single-player spin-off set in the Star Citizen universe. Scheduled for 2026, the game offers a more linear, cinematic experience aimed at players looking for something more accessible than the core MMO. The team promises a rich narrative, brought to life by legendary actors like Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, and Gary Oldman.

In this solo campaign, players will experience something close to an interactive movie, complete with expressive and detailed animated sequences, and a story where every decision can have meaningful consequences. And now, all signs point to this experience being designed with next-gen consoles in mind — including the upcoming PlayStation 6.
A giant leap for Star Citizen on consoles?
From the beginning, Star Citizen has been closely associated with PC gaming and its passionate community. But this round of hiring could mark a major shift. Based on clues in the job listings, CIG may finally be ready to bring its solo experience to consoles.
Such a move would be a strategic shift: reaching a broader audience, taking advantage of cutting-edge console performance, and above all, delivering a high-end solo experience on hardware built for spectacle.
- Next-generation graphics
- Top-tier narrative performance
- Accessible to newcomers to the universe
The studio has yet to officially confirm a console release, but everything suggests that the PlayStation 6 could become home to one of the most anticipated RPGs of the next decade.
Coming in 2026… and possibly more?
During CitizenCon 2025, CEO Chris Roberts reaffirmed the team’s confidence in a 2026 release. However, speculation is swirling about a potential console version. Could the port affect the PC launch timeline? Will it arrive later? Nothing is certain. But one thing is clear: development on Squadron 42 is in full swing.
