The Magic Grows Stronger… When Shared!
Published 21 June, 2025

The sequel to Hogwarts Legacy might just shake up everything we thought we knew, introducing multiplayer gameplay and online service elements.

While Warner Bros. seemed set on capitalizing on its most lucrative franchises — especially Hogwarts Legacy, which was central to the publisher’s strategy — the recent >cancellation of a highly anticipated DLC has dashed fans’ hopes of extending their stay at Hogwarts. Yet beyond the disappointment, a bold new adventure appears to be taking shape…

A New Multiplayer-Driven Approach

It all started with a series of job listings from Avalanche Software that raised eyebrows. According to these ads, the studio behind Hogwarts Legacy is hiring for a mysterious “online multiplayer RPG”, featuring matchmaking, PvP (player vs. player), and PvE (player vs. environment) systems, all supported by ongoing live-service updates.

One role in particular — Lead Narrative Designer — stands out: applicants will be tasked with crafting storylines adapted to a multiplayer setting, involving real-time dynamic interactions between players. A feature notably absent from the original game.

While none of the listings explicitly mention Hogwarts Legacy 2, all signs point in that direction. Avalanche Software, based in Salt Lake City — the location mentioned in the ads for hybrid on-site positions — is not publicly known to be working on any other major project. It’s highly likely these hires are for the much-anticipated sequel to their magical hit.

A Future Still Unclear, Yet Full of Promise

Rumors of a Hogwarts Legacy 2 with online features have been circulating for months, and these developments seem to confirm that Warner Bros. and Avalanche Software are aiming for a hybrid model combining single-player narrative gameplay with multiplayer live-service elements. This sequel could potentially include:

A Risky Gamble?

By leaning into a more connected and modern approach, Avalanche Software is stepping into both exciting and dangerous territory. The studio risks dividing its fanbase between die-hard fans of the immersive single-player experience of the first game, and players longing for a true MMORPG set in J.K. Rowling’s enchanting universe. Concerns are especially high given Warner Bros.’ aggressive monetization tactics in other titles — Mortal Kombat 1 being a prime example. Some fear this strategy could compromise future titles, echoing the shortcomings of past disappointments like Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, which serve as cautionary tales of monetization overtaking narrative quality.

One thing’s for sure: Hogwarts still holds many secrets, and this new chapter could redefine what narrative gaming looks like — provided it doesn’t lose its soul in the process. And for those who haven’t yet experienced this magical journey, now’s the perfect time to hop aboard: Hogwarts Legacy is now available on the PS Plus catalog. It’s a great way to (re)discover the spellbinding roots of this gaming saga while awaiting the sequel!
