Portable PlayStation 6: New Leak Reveals Switch-Inspired Docking System
The portable PlayStation 6 could mark a major milestone for handheld gaming. According to new leaks, Sony’s upcoming console may deliver home-console-level performance thanks to a docking station similar to the Switch’s dock.
While the PlayStation 5 Pro continues to evolve with impressive graphical upgrades, speculation around the PlayStation 6 is heating up. Sony remains silent, but insiders and industry leakers keep surfacing, slowly revealing the company’s ambitions. Recently, we learned that in addition to a traditional PlayStation 6, the Japanese giant is also working on a handheld console, reportedly codenamed Canis. The latest leak, from Moore’s Law Is Dead, outlines Sony’s bold plans for its next generation.

According to these reports, the PS6 Canis would come with a dock similar to the Nintendo Switch, but designed to significantly boost performance. In handheld mode, the system would run at around 1.2 GHz, while the dock would push it up to nearly 1.65 GHz. The result: a noticeable leap in overall graphical power, including ray tracing performance twice that of the PS5.
This strategy mirrors Nintendo’s approach, but with far more ambitious goals: Sony is clearly targeting the high-performance handheld console segment, while Nintendo focuses more on accessibility and exclusive titles.
Backward compatibility and long-term vision
One of the biggest highlights from the leak is backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games. This would let players keep their current library while easing the transition to the next generation. However, PS3 titles remain out of reach due to the system’s notoriously complex architecture.
This direction reinforces Sony’s long-term strategy: boosting the value of its ecosystem by offering access to a massive game library right from launch.
Launch expected in 2027
With the Switch 2 booming in sales and the upcoming arrival of the Xbox ROG Ally X, handheld gaming has never been more central to the industry. The PS6 Canis would ride this wave, with a possible release as early as 2027.
Its launch price is expected to be around $500, sold separately from the home console. This means that for those who want the full PS6 ecosystem, the total cost could climb to over $1,000. For comparison, the Xbox ROG Ally is rumored to cost $549.99 for the base version, and $899.99 for the X model.
