Forget the PlayStation Portal — Sony Is Working on a Portable PS6 with Impressive Specs

A powerhouse in the palm of your hand.

The next generation of PlayStation consoles may change the way we play—right in the palm of our hands. According to recent leaks, Sony is working on a portable PS6 that doesn’t just follow the trend: it aims to redefine it.

While the PlayStation 5 Pro is gearing up for a performance-boosting update, internal documents shared by tech channel Moore’s Law Is Dead shed light on Sony’s plans for its future lineup. The Japanese giant isn’t just envisioning a new home console—it’s reportedly preparing a true portable gaming revolution with the PlayStation 6 Canis Handheld, a device that promises power, portability, and affordability.

Portable PS6: Ambitious Technical Specs

Codenamed Canis, this new model could bridge the gap between home consoles and full mobility. Built around a 3nm monolithic chip, it aims to deliver optimized performance while keeping energy consumption in check. Ergonomically designed, the form factor is said to fall somewhere between a high-powered PS Vita and a slightly smaller alternative to the Nintendo Switch.

Documents reviewed by Moore’s Law Is Dead reveal a setup that rivals today’s consoles:

The result? Graphics rendering power estimated at about half that of the PS5 in rasterization, but with even stronger ray tracing capabilities. This configuration could allow the Canis to easily outperform the ROG Ally X without aiming to be a full-on “powerhouse.” Sony appears to be prioritizing a well-rounded, user-friendly approach.

Crucially, the handheld is expected to be backward compatible with PS5 and PS4 titles—clearly stated in internal documents—although there’s no mention of PS3 support. It’s also possible that the Canis Handheld is in fact the rumored “PlayStation Portal Pro”, a more ambitious device designed to go beyond streaming and act more like a fully autonomous mini console, similar to the Steam Deck.

A Fully Connected Handheld Console

In terms of features, the Canis checks all the boxes for a modern all-in-one device:

In other words, this portable PS6 could just as easily serve as a home console when connected via HDMI.

Compatibility and Sony’s Strategy

One of this device’s strongest selling points will likely be its backward compatibility with PS5 and PS4 games, making it instantly appealing to players. While PS3 support remains absent, the notion of a low-power mode for the PS5 suggests a deliberate strategy. By reducing the performance load on the home console, developers could optimize their games to run smoothly on the Canis with minimal compromises.

Expected Release Date and Pricing

According to internal documents and credible speculation shared by Moore’s Law Is Dead, the PlayStation 6 Canis Handheld is expected to launch sometime in Fall 2027, or possibly in early 2028—potentially before the home version of the PS6, which isn’t expected before 2029.

What really draws attention, however, is Sony’s anticipated pricing strategy. Thanks to its more compact design and cheaper architecture compared to the PS5, the Canis could hit the market at a very aggressive price point: between €399 and €499. That would offer performance similar to the low-power mode on the PS5, but in a highly portable form factor. In doing so, Sony could position itself smartly against the Switch 2, offering more power for a similar or even lower price, all while leveraging its massive PS4 and PS5 game library.
